active player
A player who is still involved in a hand.
all blue
A flush containing either clubs or spades.
all in
Put all your playable chips into the pot during the course of a hand, so you are said to be all-in.
ante
A prescribed amount that has to be posted before the start of a hand by all players.
back raise
to reraise the raise of another player
bet
placing a bet means to place a wager in the pot
big blind
two times the amount of the small blind. Both have to be placed at the beginning of the game.
blind
a blind is a required bet made before any cards are dealt. (big blind and small blind)
bluff
a bluff is a bet or raise with a very bad hand
button
the button is positioned at the dealers place and shows who is in the designated dealer
buy in
the buy in is the minimum amount of money required to participate at a poker game
check
retaining the right to act if another player initiates the betting but without raising.
community cards
cards which are dealt faceup in the center of the table that can be used by all poker players to form their best hand in Texas hold’em and Omaha.
check
check means passing without making a bet
deal
to give each player cards
dealer button
a disk that indicates the player who is the dealer
deck
a set of playing-cards
downcards
facedown dealt cards in a poker stud game
early position
if you are in an early position, it means that you have to act before other players have to do so
facecards
king, queen or jack
flop
first three community cards dealt at one time at the poker table
flush
a flush is a poker hand consisting five cards of the same suit.
fold
to throw a hand away and cancel the game
forced bet
a forced bet is a required wager to start the action on the first betting round
full house
a full house is a hand consisting of three of a kind and a pair.
kicker
highest unpaired card that helps determine the value of a five-card poker hand. If there are some players with an equal hand (for example two players have a pair of the same value) the kicker decides who will win.
lowcard
the lowest upcard at seven card stud poker
no limit
a poker version where players are allowed to wager any or all of their chips in one bet
option
the possibillity to raise a bet that is given to a player with a blind
overcard
the highest hole card on the board.
pass
decline to bet
passive
a passive player is checking and calling hands rather betting and raising.
pot limit
poker games at which you are allowed to bet up to the amount of the pot
push
replacing an existing dealer with a new dealer at a particular table.
raise
increasing the amount of a previous wager
re raise
raising someone’s raise
river
the final poker card that is dealt.
side pot
a side pot is a separate pot which is formed when a player is all in.
showdown
final and deciding act of a poker game and determining the winner of the pot
small blind
the smallest blind in a poker game
split pot
a pot that is divided among the poker players, either because of a tie for the best hand or by agreement prior to the showdown
straight
a straight is a poker hand containing five cards in consecutive rank.
straight flush
Five cards in consecutive rank of the same suit
tournament
poker tournaments are competitions, normally with an entry fee and prizes to win
turn
the turn is the fourth card dealt on the board during community card games
